A well-designed home for aging in place will be both adaptable and accessible since the residents’ needs will change through the years. Additionally, a sustainably built home will have lower maintenance and energy costs as well as the corresponding benefits to the environment and future world. This Hearth of Mellow design combines these two considerations with the design concept modern medieval in a 1800 square foot townhouse at a site in Lafayette, Indiana. To keep elevation changes at a minimum, there ramps rather than steps at all entrances, and inside the vinyl and carpet tile is from the same company and can be installed with a clean seam necessitating no transition strip. Energy Star appliances were selected as well as faucets and shower heads with WaterSense labels and the windows are double glazed with argon gas in the middle to keep the house insulated without closing the envelope to tightly. The medieval concept is manifested in the solid nature of construction, use of stone, inclusion of a central fireplace, rich plum tone implicative or royalty, and half-timber accent wall, balanced with the modernity of the open concept, contemporary adaptation of furniture and minimal clarification of the Romanesque ambiance.
