Since millennials embrace the idea of communal living, this apartment building is designed to bring artists, agents and curators under one roof and to help make their enthusiasm for creating a life rather than achieving a work-life balance a reality. Each 300 square foot apartment approaches the tension between artists needing an inspiring space and a blank canvas by making the entire design pivot on converting between four functions: a gallery, studio, dining or social space, and a bedroom. Gallery lighting spotlights artwork and operates on dimmers to suit the resident’s various needs. Cabinetry veils a kitchen and provides personal and work-related storage. An expanding table and nesting ottomans expand to comfortably seat ten for dining. Using a light colored concrete floor, white cabinetry, and light neutral walls give the space a clean slate for painters to begin their masterpieces, while also providing an immaculate backdrop for showcasing their works to clients. The dynamic wood paneling on the ceiling adds some unexpected artist flare and natural energy along with the vertical garden. Rich navies were the only hue added to the color palette to keep the atmosphere professional for escorting clients through the gallery and add a sophisticated aura.
